Numerous monuments of folk architecture, indescribable flora and fauna and omnipresent silence, this is what the Museum of the Kysuce Village in Vychylovka offers.
The legacy of our grandparents and great-grandparents lying in the picturesque environment of Chmúrná valley brings back memories of youth, uncovers the history, and clarifies the origins of settlements scattered around the region of Kysuce.
Being one of the most extensive expositions of folk architecture in Slovakia, the Museum includes 34 buildings, the majority of which have been replaced from the currently non-existing villages Riečnica and Harvelka. The centre of the open-air museum displays its dominants, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary from Zborov nad Bystricou, a tavern from the village of Korňa and the oldest residential house from Oščadnica. The water mill and sawmill with half-timbered construction from the village of Klubina rank among the jewels of the folk architecture.
During the open season, visitors can see demonstrations of craftsmanship, performances by folklore groups, ensembles from the Kysuce region and the preparation of the local cuisine. The unique environment is a place sought after by filmmakers. The exterior scenes of the films Želary and Flying Cyprián were partially made in the open-air museum. The Seasonal exhibition in the ethnographic museum lasts from May 1 to October 31.

Historic forest headland railway
The historic forest headland railway has been running since 1st June 2022.
To feel the charm of the valley even more intensively, you can ride the Historic Forest Headland Railway, which ranks among the local cultural monuments. It is a preserved and the only functioning historic headland railways in Europe, there are only three of them all over the world. In the past, the Kysuce railway in the valley of the Bystrica river was used for weighing wood extracted from the surrounding forests. At the time of its construction in 1926, the railroad was over 110 kilometres long. With the time passing, its utility value deteriorated, but the headland system used today was preserved from the original railway. Currently, the 3.6 km track serves to transport visitors within the museum area.

There is an option to ride a light rail operation vehicle with a capacity of 5 passengers. The operation vehicle rides on the route Station Skanzen Sedlo Beskyd three times a day on order, the entire trip taking approximately 2 hours. The price of a two-way ticket is €7. The vehicle ride is not suitable for children under 6 years of age. When the weather is cold or rainy, you are recommended to take warm clothes.
