The Municipality of Zákopčie is located in the north-eastern part of the Javorníky mountain range giving a unique character to the location. The cadastre of the Municipality covers an area of 2,963 ha.
It is one of the largest municipalities in Kysuce and lies at an altitude of 470 to 875 above sea level. The area of the whole municipality is divided into five valleys: Holov, Kordišov, Ruľcov, Polievkov and Kljukov The village contains up to 70 (in the past around 90) tiny settlements scattered over the surrounding hills. The history of Zákopčie, one of the latest villages founded in the upper Kysuce, dates back to 1662.
The village centre provides the residents with the administrative and other services, i.e there is a municipal office, a post office, a municipal library, a primary and kindergarten school, a supermarket, a convenience store, a flower shop and a restaurant. In the library there is a cultural and information centre with the sale of promotional material of the village and a permanent exhibition of folk culture "The Life of Our Acestors".
