The memorial, built in 1896 to commemorate the one thousandth anniversary of the Hungarians’ arrival in the Carpathian valley, stands in the town centre. Turul, a sacred bird, stood on the memorial as a symbol of old Magyars (Hungarians).
In November 1918 the memorial was pulled down and after a reconstruction and modification in 1924 it became a Memorial of M. R. Štefánik.
In the 1950’s, the stone bust of the General had been thrown to the local well for a long period of forty years, during which various symbols of communist power were placed on the memorial, except for the year 1968. In 1990 the original bust of the General was restored and deposited in the Town Hall meeting room, and a bronze replica of the bust was placed on the memorial.
