Historical and cultural attractions
Turzovka was established in 1598 by palatine Juraj Turzo, the supreme representative of the Hungarian nobility in what today is Slovakia. A parish was established there in 1694. Today it includes the villages of Podvysoká, Dlhá nad Kysucou, Olešná and it is one of the biggest and largest parishes in the Nitra diocese. The current Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary is a baroque building from 1759. In 1914 the village was connected by railway, the Čadca – Makov track. Over the centuries, Turzovka expanded to the biggest village in the former Czechoslovakia (prior to being divided into 4 separate villages in 1954 it had 14 thousand inhabitants). In 1968 it became a town. Turzovka is one of the centres of traditional tinker’s craft as affirmed by the monument to Tinker and his Assistant by academic painter Miroslav Cipár situated in the town centre.
