thumb Velky Polom ikonaVeľký Polom, the highest peak on the Slovak side of the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mountains, is located in the cadastre of the municipality of Raková.

Its top part reaching the altitude of 1,067 m above sea level is a nature reserve with the 5th level of protection on both sides of the border.

The remains of the original forests can be considered the most valuable part of the reserve. Spruce trees, white fir and mountain maple are the dominating culture of the forest that lives its own life. Due to the possible fall of branches and trees even in the case of calm, windless weather, entry to the site is at your own risk and requires vigilance. Any movement out of the marked path is prohibited.

For an ordinary tourist, the peak of Veľký Polom and its adjacent areas might be reminiscent of "moon landscape" - uprooted trees, broken tree trunks and dry trees. All of this caused by bark-beetle invasion in combination with extreme wind gusts blowing against the open mountain ridge. All in all, you are entering a forest where time and natural elements rule.
