Zákopčie is situated in the district of Čadca in the north western part of the Javorníky mountain range. The characteristic feature of the village are dozens of settlements scattered around the surrounding the hills above several valleys: Holov, Kordišov, Rulcov, Polievkov and Kľukov. The altitude ranges from 470 and 875 m above sea level.
The first written mention on the village founded during the Wallachian colonization comes from 1662. The municipality of Zákopčie is dominated by the baroque-classical church of St. John the Baptist from 1791. The church built by Prince Anton Esterházy had no crypts and was closely connected to the adjacent old cemetery.
Tourist attractions:
The highest of the village is the Jakubov peak (875 m above sea level). There is a lookout tower from 2011 on the Marťak hill above the Petránky settlement. Nordic skiing is a popular activity due to the Beskydy-Javorník cross-country skiing route, which passes through the cadastre of the municipality along the ridge of Javorník. The trail connecting to the route starts in front of the church at the centre of Zákopčie. The trail continues towards the cemetery along the road to the cross U Krátkov At the cross, the trail turns left towards Kavickov hill and continues to Trnkov and Petránky where it connects to the main route under the high-voltage line. The main route will take you further to the lookout point. The highway passes by the observation tower, where there is an information board and a shelter for tourists.
