skanzen nova bystrica mIn 1974, an open-air museum - Museum of the Kysuce Village was established in Vychylovka. The individual buildings making an exposition of the open-air museum come from several municipalities withing the Region of Kysuce.

All of these buildings are original, which means they have great cultural and historical value. The wooden houses are scattered around the museum area to symbolize the typical character of a Kysuce highland settlement. There is a chapel from Klubina, a pub from Korňa, a mayor´s house and a farmer´s house brought from the flooded villages of Riečnica and Harvelka.

Vychylovka, a local part of Nová Bystrica, can also be proud of a unique headland railway. This railway, now used by tourists and administered by the Kysuce Museum in Čadca, used to function as an important transport link between Orava and Kysuce.

skanzen vychylovkaOn its whole length of 110 km, the railway had to overcome a significant difference in altitude, which was solved using the headland system. Out of the original railway used for weighing wood only the part heading to Vychylovka has been preserved till these days. The other parts were gradually dismantled and the Bystrica cycling route has been built on the railway foundations.

The historic forest headland railway in Vychylovka is included in the ist of national cultural monuments. After visiting the Museum of the Kysuce village, be sure to stop by the Vychylovka river. Its rugged bottom with cascades and thresholds has been declared a natural monument. In spring, when it rains a lot and the snow melts intensively, the stream bed is sufficiently watered and the natural spectacle of the flowing water making its way through the thresholds is a powerful experience.
