osada u papaji mkovThe settlement Papajovci in Makov is located only a few tens of meters from the main road in a part called Čierne. It is right here, at a relatively high altitude, that you can sit and rest under the crown of the massive cypress elm.

Experts consider this rare tree as one of the oldest and at the same time the most powerful elms in Central Europe.

The elm tree in Makov is also pictured in the municipal coat of arms. The circumference of its trunk at the root is more than 11 meters, at a height of 1.3 meters it has a circumference of over 6 meters.

The massive tree reaching a height of 30 meters provides passers-by a fine place to rest in the shade of its majestic crown. The almost 500-year-old elm U Papaji was declared a protected tree in 1969.

The source of the river Kysuca

The source of the river, which gave its name to the entire region, does not originate in any specific settlement, but we included it in this publication for a simple reason. Every enthusiast of hiking and exploring peaceful corners hidden deep in nature should visit the spot of the river source deep in the middle of the Hričov forest. It is a must for any resident of Kysuce to drink its water at least once in their life. The spring is located at an altitude of 945 m above sea level.

Along its course, it is enriched by the tributaries of streams and rivers: Trojačka, Pavelkovský stream, Makovský stream, Varechovský stream, Kelčov, Jedlovník, Semetešský stream, Turkovský stream, Dlžiansky stream, Predmieranka, Olešnianka, Raková, Trstená, Čierňanka, Riek, Bukovský stream, Oščadnica, Bystrica, Vlčovský stream, Ochodničanka, Lodnianka, Podhájsky stream, Povinský stream, Vadičovský stream, Snežnica, Neslušanka and Liešovský stream. In total, the river Kysuca collects water from 67 larger tributaries.

After approximately 63 km of its length, the river leaves the borders of the Kysuce region in the south and 3 km further, it flows into the Váh River near the Budatín Castle. Here, the silvery Kysuca river loses its name to hand over the collected water to Váh running southwards across the entire Slovakia to meet with the Danube River that empties into the Black Sea.

The spring of the Kysuca River in Makov is an established starting point of the Javorníky trail that leads along the ridge of Javorníky from Makov to Čadca and from Čadca to Budatín.
